How Bad is it?
Before taking any measures to fix your pool yourself, you need to determine exactly how much algae is in your swimming pool.
Light Green: indicates a lower level of algae.
Dark Green: indicates a medium level of algae.
Black-ish Green: this indicates an extremely high level of algae, and at this point, you certainly should not try to fix the problem yourself. Seek professional help as your pool may need to be drained and cleaned.
The most effective sanitiser for green water is Chlorine. When you maintain a swimming pool with chlorine, it will inhibit algae from growing. The chlorine also destroys algae, and the fastest way is to use chlorine ‘shock treatment’ with a main active ingredient of calcium hypochlorite. Although if you let the chlorine level drop, it will cause an algae outbreak, which is what turns your pool water green.
If you do apply a ‘shock treatment’ don’t panic when you water still appears cloudy. After the algae has been killed, the water will turn a cloudy almost grey/blue colour. The team at Danny’s can assist you with more information and how to attend to this.
If this is the first or one of the very times your pool has turned green then yes, it is highly likely that algae is the culprit. However, if you feel like this happens way too often, then we would suggest there is another issue with your pool other than lack of chlorine.
Chlorine is the protector of your swimming pool. It acts as a disinfectant from germs and bacteria in the water – hence why when your chlorine level drops algae grows. The longer chlorine is absent in your pool; the more aggressive the algae will get, so don’t ignore the signs of your pool water appearing to be an unusual colour compared to normal.
In some cases your green pool water can be a result of pump or filter – perhaps they are undersized for what you need or simply aren’t operating correctly. If you are not running your pool pump for a long enough time, it may not be cleaning efficiently and allowing the growth of algae.
